Follow on Google News | Kia Carson Leads Milton High School at GHSA State Track & Field MeetSenior concludes storybook season with second place and school record in long jump
By: Milton High School Track & Field Team Under damp, humid, cloudy and off-on rainy conditions, not ideal for most long jumpers, Carson, jumping in the first flite, put her performance up on her second jump of the competition and was the leader going into the second flite. Bola Hombolu of Collins Hill surpassed Carson in the second flite jumping 17’9” going into the final three jumps. During the final not a single jumper left in the competition improved in the not-so-ideal conditions and the competition was settled. Carson was an unlikely podium finisher as she had only been fifth at Fulton County, fourth at region (final qualifier for sectionals), and only five at the sectionals. A truly remarkable performance on a day not ideal for long jumping! Senior Devon Artis was the other Lady Eagle competing at the state meet and her 57.10 performance in the 400 meter semifinals put her in the final where she eventually raced to a seventh place finish (57.26) to score two team points and conclude her track career at Milton. Next up for the Eagle track team is the Boys GHSA State Track & Field Meet which will be held May 8-10, 2014 at Jefferson High School Memorial Stadium in Jefferson, GA. Milton athletes competing include Corey Claiborne-Landy in the discus (May 8th) and Kevin McGorrey and Jack Bluth in the 800 meters (May 9th).
