MANITOWOC, Wis. - May 1, 2014 - PRLog -- MANITOWOC, Wisc. – May 1, 2014 – May is skin cancer awareness month and Dermatology Associates of Wisconsin (http://www.dermwisconsin.com) and Forefront Dermatology (http://forefrontdermatology.com) want to remind residents in Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan and Indiana that Monday May 5is Melanoma Monday, a day of awareness about the importance of prevention and early detection of the most dangerous form of skin cancer (http://dermwisconsin.com/skinCancer.php).

“Melanoma is a particularly dangerous form of skin cancer because of how quickly it spreads to other areas of the body,” said Kenneth Katz, MD, Dermatologist and founder of Dermatology Associates of Wisconsin and Forefront Dermatology. “While melanoma is a scary form of cancer, it can be treated and cured if caught early enough.”

Melanoma is a skin tumor that can appear as a change to existing moles or the development of a newly pigmented area or noticeably different growth on your skin. Often these changes can go unnoticed in everyday life and that’s why it’s important to have regular checkups with your dermatologist.

Melanoma is so deadly because it can quickly spread to affect other areas of the body, such as internal organs. Over the past 30 years, cases of melanoma have steadily increased and it is the most common form of cancer for young adults age 25 – 29. It is estimated that by 2015 one in 50 Americans will develop melanoma in their lifetime. While the statistics show melanoma is on the rise, it can be prevented through protection against the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays.

“Most people don’t realize how dangerous melanoma is until it’s too late, taking steps to protect yourself, is the first step in preventing melanoma,” said Dr. Katz. All Dermatology Associates of Wisconsin locations perform skin cancer screenings. It is advised that people visit their dermatologists at least once a year to check for melanoma and other warning signs of skin cancers before a treatable condition spreads.
