ROCHESTER, N.Y. - April 28, 2014 - PRLog -- April 25, 2014 – NEW YORK – With May around the corner, people around the world are gearing up to spread awareness and educate others as Lupus Awareness Month kicks off. LupusChick.com, formerly LupusSurvivalGuide.com, a website that discusses all things Lupus and autoimmune disease related, plans to start Lupus Awareness Month with increased special features by guest bloggers and a book giveaway. Lupus: Real Life, Real Patients, Real Talk, written by LupusChick.com founder Marisa Zeppieri-Caruana, is now available in print and eBook. The book, written in a similar fashion as the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, highlights inspirational stories from men and women of all ages who are living with the disease. The book also features perspectives from spouses, friends, parents and physicians.

Zeppieri-Caruana, a Lupus patient since 2001, explained, “I put this book together because I spent many years encountering Lupus patients who said the hardest thing about the disease was  that they felt  alone. There are so many personal and intimate stories in this book that I truly believe every Lupus patient out there can find at least one person’s story they can relate to, one that is somewhat similar to their own story. I wanted to stay away from your typical information filled medical book that doesn’t really explore what a Lupus patient’s day to day life is like. The people in this book share the raw truth about the disease, but they do so in an inspirational and motivational way. My goal was to highlight people who have accomplished so much, and are living their life to the fullest, despite Lupus.”

Lupus is a chronic autoimmune and inflammatory disease that affects approximately 5 million men and women around the world. In a patient with Lupus, the immune system that was originally designed to protect the body turns against itself.  The main organs affected are the kidneys, heart, lung, brain, as well as the skin and joints. Currently there is no cure, and until the recent release of Benlysta, there was no medication specifically created to help Lupus patients.

In addition to May’s book giveaway, LupusChick.com is also excited to announce the redesign of the website and addition of several key writers and interns, some who have written for outlets including USA Today, Christianity Today, Glamour, and more. The LupusChick blog discusses a wide variety of Lupus topics such as sex, relationships, alternative treatments, nutrition, various autoimmune diseases, recipes, men and lupus, and more.
