The 2014 Resume — Resume Writer Provides Essential Tips

South Florida Resume Writer, Linda Hamburger says “Don’t use the PDF! A good resume is typo free and easy to scan. Employers should be able to look at the first sentence and last sentence and know what you do. Not what you want to do."

April 25, 2014 - PRLog -- “Stop pinching pennies if you want a job,” says resume writer Linda Hamburger of On Call Resumes located in South Florida. “Too often new graduates and the under- or unemployed won’t even pay $60 for a new resume, or join a professional association. But, they are desperate for work. If you could make over $20,000 for putting in just a few additional dollars, wouldn’t that be a good investment?”

“Unless interviews are coming along, your resume is the problem. Before you get an interview, you have to get noticed,” says Hamburger.

“Many people rely on old-school resumes that no longer work in our ‘e-mail’ society. I see typos, long paragraphs, extraneous information. These are just a few of the things that an applicant may miss that leads to a lost interview.”

“Remove your job objective from the top,” advises Hamburger. “A modern resume immediately conveys what an applicant is qualified to do. List all software programs you know at the top, instead of that job objective. Why? Because your objective is to the get job you’ve applied for. The way you get the job is by proving you can do it.”

“List any foreign languages you are proficient in, up top,” says Hamburger. “Put your career statement, not your career goal at the top. For example, are you a certified accountant with over 10 years’ experience? Say that. Don’t say you want a job as an accountant. Better show why you are qualified.”

“Add your LinkedIn address either at the very top or very bottom of your resume,” says Hamburger. “If you don’t have a LinkedIn page, get one. LinkedIn is the tool of professionals.”

What organizations you belong to and nonprofit activities should be listed toward the bottom of the resume. “I am surprised by how many resumes come to my desk and don’t list any professional association or nonprofit activity. I advise those people to immediately join something that relates to their career.”

Hamburger also cautions about sending a resume in pdf format. “Use Word attachment and you might want to also copy and paste your resume into the body of the email. Word opens faster and employers are skilled at quickly scanning a Word document. Visually, it takes us longer to scan a pdf. Plus, it is overkill. You’ve possibly sent them two version of your resume. One in Word and one as a PDF. Unless the job asks specifically for PDF, don’t bother.”
