New York based fashion designer and rock singer Michael Houghton is the creative genius behind many rock & roll associated artistic endeavors. Known primarily for his “Rock Punk Couture” clothing line, his British-inspired original designs have made fans & clients out of such legendary rock and art world figures as The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Damien Hirst & Guns ‘n Roses, to name a few. His prestigious roster of clients come to be outfitted by Houghton when they need distinctive custom wardrobe items with close attention paid to traditional bespoke tailoring. They are distinctly innovative designs that can be found nowhere else. Something Mr. Houghton is widely known for. His collection first met with tremendous success in 2004 after a piece ran in WWD following his NY Fashion Week debut proclaiming him a promising up and coming new talent. Past collections have now sold worldwide in fine establishments such as Harvey Nichols, Madison and Fred Segal.

Now taking it a step further, Michael Houghton delves into the contemporary art realm with a series of paintings entitled “The Smoking Series”. These pieces, once again influenced by his love of all things “rock”, feature repurposed images on canvas, wood, metal & light box of legendary icons such as Keith Richards, David Bowie, Mick Jagger and John Lennon from rock’s classic 60’s & 70’s glory period. Meticulously created by Mr. Houghton and embellished with all their glittered finery, the paintings reflect the same close attention to detail he has parlayed into making each and every piece in his custom clothing line so unique.

Mr. Houghton’s first installation of “The Smoking Series” took place in December 2010, and resulted in a near sold out show at its opening reception in Soho, NY. Further acclaim came with a 6-week impromptu showing in May/June 2011 at the 19 Kenmare St. Gallery in downtown NYC. This fall, he was asked by the Eileen S. Kaminsky Family Foundation to participate in their annual benefit exhibition entitled “2x2”, at Mana Contemporary in NJ. This year’s fundraiser is a benefit of artists for artists assisting those who suffered irreplaceable artwork & property damage in the wake of hurricane Sandy. Mr. Houghton responded by donating his original shadowbox entitled “The Raven” and the piece had the distinction of being one of the few works of art in the exhibition used by Mana for all promotion of the show, most notably in the November 2012 issue of Art + Auction magazine. This is testament to the innovative & cutting edge appeal of his art pieces.

There seems to be no end in sight to where Michael Houghton’s artistic interests will lead him.
