In an effort to revitalize the entire area, Hallmark developed Crown Center in 1971 and opened The American Restaurant in 1974. Warren Platner (Windows on the World in the World Trade Center and Water Tower Place in Chicago) was asked to help with the design, American culinary legend James Beard was asked to help develop the culinary concept and Joe Baum, the legendary restaurateur, were all brought in on the project. Recognized as the premier dining venue for outstanding cuisine since it opened, the restaurant has received numerous local and national awards, and has produced three James Beard Award Winning chefs, most recently, Debbie Gold.
