The American Restaurant Celebrates 40 Years of Fine-Dining in Kansas City
Kansas City's only Forbes Four Star and AAA Four Diamond Award recipient celebrates 40 years of culinary excellence with a guest chef dinner each month of 2014.
In 1910, Joyce C. Hall founded Hallmark, enhancing downtown and giving it an economic boost. In an effort to revitalize the entire area, Hallmark developed Crown Center in 1971 and opened The American Restaurant in 1974. Warren Platner (Windows on the World in the World Trade Center and Water Tower Place in Chicago) was asked to help with the design, American culinary legend James Beard was asked to help develop the culinary concept and Joe Baum, the legendary restaurateur, were all brought in on the project.
Recognized as the premier dining venue for outstanding cuisine since it opened, the restaurant has received numerous local and national awards, and has produced three James Beard Award Winning chefs, most recently, Debbie Gold. Other notable American Restaurant alums include: Bradley Ogden, Christopher Elbow, Celina Tio, Alex Pope, Colby Garrelts, Michael Smith, and, Master Sommelier Doug Frost. Led by General Manager Jamie Jamison, accompanied by a highly accomplished culinary team and 11 on-staff sommeliers, The American Restaurant is one of the city’s most iconic and most romantic places to dine.
The American Restaurant is perched atop Crown Center giving diners a spectacular, panoramic view of the downtown cityscape. The timeless design, floor to ceiling views, elegant atmosphere, top-notch service and award winning wine list are just a few notables that continue to give guests a wonderful dining experience. The American Restaurant is the perfect setting for intimate and grand affairs, business outings, happy hours and all your special dining needs.
