San Jan del Sur, Nicaragua’s #1 Horseback Riding Adventure Now Offering Overnight Accommodation
Rancho Chilamate's all-inclusive guest ranch features four new rooms serving up hearty meals and a great horseback ride.
When asked about expanding from horseback riding to accommodate guests, Canadian expat and managing owner Heather "Blue" van Doorninck declared, “So many of our guests were asking to stay after their horse ride to lounge poolside or stay the night, so it was a natural evolution of the business to convert the main Hacienda to include rooms for overnight stays.
Rancho Chilamate Off-Grid Guest Ranch offers visitors a chance to really immerse themselves in the magic of rural Nicaragua with some great food, extra-comfy beds, warm showers and cold beer. And for horse lovers, our stable full of happy, healthy horses is a dream come true!"

Situated in the gorgeous tropical valley of the 450 acre Las Fincas Reserve–10km south of the popular beach town of San Juan del Sur–Rancho Chilamate Off-Grid Guest Ranch brings a unique lodging concept to the area. All four guestrooms–from El Pirata through El Romantico–offer a spacious en suite bathroom, showers with solar warmed water, quality Serta Therapeutic pillow top mattresses with memory foam pillows, an in-room safe, fans, and free Wi-Fi. A luxurious option not found in this area of Nicaragua.
The dining area and ‘great room’ are authentically decorated with a collection of paintings from Blue’s travels, salvaged beach-wood art and eclectic artifacts. The overstuffed daybed, the “Jimmy Hendricks Coffee Corner,” spacious pool deck and palapa-covered outdoor living room offer a variety of relaxation options - all with panoramic views of the surrounding nature reserve and horse stables.
There's plenty of bird watching and wildlife viewing here as well - including the resident Howler Monkey troops who regularly pass by the ranch and serve as your early morning wake up call.
Eco-conscious from conception, the ranch operates on 100% solar power. Local hands using local resources built all facilities, and a portion from every horseback ride go to a community fund. From spay and neuter animal clinics to Christmas bucket distribution to families in need, the Ranch is committed to giving back.
As wonderful as the ranch may be – your stay at Rancho Chilamate is limited to a 3 night maximum ~ “Nicaragua is such a great place to explore - we feel it is best to go and enjoy other incredible experiences this country has to offer”, says cowgirl Blue. They have provided suggested itineraries to help with your travel plans to do just that.
As an added guest bonus, Blue is also a professional photographer, capturing horseback ride photos for guests to enjoy on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/
