SAN FRANCISCO - April 18, 2014 - PRLog -- April 17, 2014

"Folk Lok" is a new multimedia performance presented by American India Foundation featuring international recording artist Mandeep Sethi, the inaugural grantee of the organization’s Arts Innovation Fund. This intergenerational, cross-‐cultural piece will examine and detail the human expressions of Folk Culture and Hip-‐Hop through film and a live musical performance.

Premiering at the prestigious Miner Auditorium at the SFJAZZ Center, “Folk Lok” is a multi-‐ dimensional experience that will take viewers on a trip through Mandeep’s homeland of Punjab as he meets with well-‐respected folk musicians as well as younger artists to discuss the importance of tradition, collaboration, and the future of Punjabi Folk Music from a global perspective. As a seasoned practitioner of Hip-‐Hop Culture, Sethi shifts between borders in an effort to contextualize Hip-‐Hop music as a modern folk culture that is carrying on the lineage of his Punjabi ancestors.

The visual portion of the experience will be followed by an exclusive collaborative performance between Mandeep Sethi and Punjabi Folk Legend Ustad Lal Singh Bhatti Ji, also known as the “Godfather of the Dhol”.

“Folk Lok” was commissioned by AIF through its Arts Innovation Fund, created to catalyze cultural inquiry and diversity as a means to strengthen our communities and formulate new approaches to common problem-‐solving. The Fund is a part of AIF’s “Our Family, Our Neighborhood, Our World” (O3) project, a cultural diplomacy initiative of the U.S. Department of State, that empowers youth as creative agents of change through innovation in cross-‐cultural education utilizing creative methodologies including music, dance, theatre, and film to build communities of cooperation, service, and social responsibility in India and Pakistan.
