FAU / Pine Jog Environmental Education Center Welcomed Supporters to ‘Green Gala Masquerade Ball’
(West Palm Beach, FL – April 14, 2014) Ray Coleman, Executive Director of the Pine Jog Environmental Education Center, welcomed more than 160 friends and supporters to a festive Green Gala Masquerade Ball, held last Saturday night (April 12) at the West Palm Beach Marriott.
Local community leaders Bobbi Horwich and Jeff Koons served as Honorary Chairs of the fun event with the theme of “Revealing Today’s Environmental Leaders.”
Special Awards were given to:
+ Environmental Educator of the Year: Laurie Mecca, science teacher at Pine Jog Elementary School
+ Environmental Program of the Year: Sunflower Creative Arts and Friends of the MacArthur State Park
+ Environmental Agency/Nonprofit of the Year: Bee Understanding, represented by founder Al Salopek
+ Environmental Visionary: Elizabeth Dowdle
+ Lifetime Achievement:
Also honored at the event was the late Irene Hooper, the longtime executive director of Seacamp Association.
Among those celebrating the award winners and the ongoing accomplishments of the Pine Jog Environmental Education Center, a unit of the College of Education of Florida Atlantic University, were Florida State Representative Mark Pafford, Michelle Oyola McGovern, Regional Director for U.S. Senator Bill Nelson, and a full contingent from FAU, Including Dr. John Kelly, President; Dr. Valerie Bristor, Dean of FAU’s College of Education; Joanne Davis, FAU Interim Vice President for Community Engagement Executive Director of FAU Foundation; Brett Greenberg, FAU Foundation Board Member; Dr. Dale Gawlik, Director of Environmental Sciences Department; and Sheriann Namer, Director of Development & Outreach.
"I am so excited and humbled by the overwhelming turnout and support demonstrated at this year’s Green Gala Masquerade Ball,” said Ray Coleman. “Not only was this event a tremendous amount of fun, but the nearly $60,000 raised will assist Pine Jog Environmental Education Center to continue our critical work teaching children and adults to conserve, protect and enjoy our natural world.”
