March 4, 2014 – Northern Manhattan’s UP Theater Company announces details of its next production, Broad Channel by the company’s artistic director James Bosley. Named for the marshy isle under the flight path of JFK Airport, Broad Channel is described as a biting new drama about a struggling blue collar family that comes to blows when they learn that a treasured painting brought home by Grandpa George, a hero of WWII, is worth a million dollars... and was stolen from a victim of the Holocaust. The idea for the play came when Bosley read an article about the finding of a valuable treasure, missing since WWII, being returned to the ecstatic grandchildren of its original owner. But as to where the treasure was uncovered, the piece made no mention other than to say it was found in the modest home of an American G.I. “It started me wondering what dramas might have occurred at that end of the story, when this modest home was forced to give it up.” Broad Channel is directed by Kathy Gail MacGowan. Playing the family are Matt Higgins, Laura Fois and Andrew Albigese. They are joined by Rik Walter as an opportunistic art sleuth and Elissa Middleton as the lady who comes to take the painting back to her family home in Belgium. Walter doubles as the late Beaux Arts painter, William Adolph Bouguereau. The crew includes: Michael Friedlander, Stage Manager; Set design by John McDermott, Lighting by Duane Pagano; Costumes by Kimberley Windbiel; Sound by David Margolin Lawson; Graphic Design by Gretchen Mergenthaler. The play previews April 30th, then runs Thursdays through Saturdays at 8pm, Sundays at 3pm through May 18th. There is no show on Friday, May 2nd. The Venue is Cabrini Repertory Theater, 701 Fort Washington Avenue, New York, NY 10040. UP Theater Company was founded in 2010 by Inwood theater artists who endeavored to bring professional productions to their own neighborhood of Northern Manhattan. Eschewing crowd-pleasing chestnuts, UP focuses on provocative new work by contemporary playwrights. They soon established a reputation for being gritty, rambunctious, and irreverent. UP Theater Company receives support from The Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance, The Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center Neighborhood Fund, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Papasito Restaurant, PRG Lighting, Evydent, and New Heights Realty.
