FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - April 14, 2014 - PRLog -- Summer is coming up and it's time to start planning some activities to do. Keep reading, this isn't an advertisement to convince you to come to Florida. Whether you are learning to fly, want to get started, own your own aircraft, or enthusiastic about aviation, going to the Bahamas will just add even more excitement to you especially when you fly yourself.

The Bahamas is a beautiful country - a set of islands that offer a wide variety of incredible scenic flights and island hopping. As a student, private, instrument, or even commercial pilot, you might already know the ins and outs of your own state or region, but the Bahamas is a whole different world of flying.

Since it counts as an international flight and you cross the US ADIZ (Air Defense Identification Zone), you will have a lot of paperwork to fill out and to know about all the procedures of ensuring a safe and bureaucratic-friendly way to return to the United States. Don't worry, it isn't too bad, most of it is done online, but the Bahamas does require an extensive amount of paperwork.

Not only that, the Bahamas uses ICAO phraseology and procedures and if you are flying into Nassau or Freeport using instruments, you'll have to know how to read Jeppesen charts pretty well.

After all of that, is it worth it? Definitely, without a doubt. Something about flying for only 30 minutes landing at an uncontrolled airport in the middle of the ocean in such sweet isolation, taking a ferry to the other island with long white sand beaches and turquoise blue water makes you feel not only like a real pilot, but like you landed in Atlantis or somewhere special.

Jarrett Iovine is a South Florida Flight Instructor (http://www.facebook.com/southfloridacfi) that specializes in Bahamas checkouts as well as general aviation needs and services. There are a few schools in South Florida that offer island flying checkout packages but can get extremely pricy and doesn't come with the freedom and relaxation that is present when hiring a private instructor. Did I mention that it's cheaper too than going through a school?

Pilots, this is your chance to explore your summer time off! Add MYBS, MYNN, or MYGF into your logbook and show off your buds at your local school, flight club, or FBO what you did this summer. To find out more, come visit my page at http://www.facebook.com/southfloridacfi. See you in the sun!
