Fashion Revolution Day: The Global Movement to End Labor Exploitation

By: AltnerNatives

RICHMOND, Va. - April 11, 2014 - PRLog -- Fashion Revolution Day is an international response to the Rana Plaza collapse in Dhaka, Bangladesh, a catastrophe with a death toll of 1,133. The Fashion Revolution campaign has gained significant interest worldwide, most prominently in Western Europe. Founder of Fashion Revolution and executive director of Futerra, the industry’s leading sustainability communications agency, Carry Somers states, “Fashion Revolution Day has gathered incredible momentum on a global scale. We have over 40 countries around the world who will be participating in the day and I believe this represents a really exciting opportunity to reconnect fashion-lovers with the people who made their clothes.” Margaret Young, the Baroness of Hornsey who set up the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Ethics and Sustainability in Fashion says, “Fashion Revolution Day promises to be one of the very few truly global campaigns to emerge this century.”

The campaign is also led by a board of industry leaders, campaigners, designers, supermodels, as well as appointed representatives to coordinate events around the world. Of these specially selected coordinators includes Richmond’s own Guadalupe Blevins for her 20 years of work toward the development of sustainable fashion in Guatemala.

Guadalupe, partnered with RVA Fashion Week, VCU Fashion Design and AlterNatives, brings to Richmond the 1st annual Fashion Revolution Day Fashion Show. “...Fashion Revolution Day will become the catalyst that brings together those who want to see change within the industry” (Fashion Revolution). With this in mind, Guadalupe and partners invite the Richmond community to engage in our revolution by attending the Fashion Revolution Day Fashion Show. The show will feature eco-ethic clothing, local artisans, music, and presentations directed to educating the public of the power behind consumer choices. The show will be hosted by AlterNatives Boutique in Carytown, located at 3320 W. Cary Street on April 24, 2014.

However, participation in Fashion Revolution Day is not limited to the event. On April 24, 2014 we challenge you to “wear your heart on your sleeve” by wearing your clothes inside out with the tags displayed for the world to see. This simple task encourages consumers to recognize the origins of their clothing. #INSIDEOUT
