Romans 8:28 says this, “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”

Seems like a very simple, straight-forward scripture, right? And the interpretation is obvious too; no matter what happens to you it is all part of a master plan that is working good for God’s purpose in your life.

Many believers, after experiencing a destructive event or destructive circumstance in their lives, like sickness, financial devastation, or broken relationships, will then attempt to find the good in it. Once they determine the good that has come from the situation, they use that to explain why God either caused or allowed it to happen.

What they are really doing is attributing to God the work of the devil. The devil is the one who comes to steal, kill, and destroy, not God. He is not God’s agent; he is the enemy of God who is perpetrating evil works against all humanity, including you. God is indeed the master of all circumstances, but He is certainly not the author of all circumstances.

Jesus, on the other hand, came that we would have life and have it more abundantly. Jesus gave us His authority and power to overcome the devil and all his evil works.

So, what is it that is working together for good? It’s God’s power, His wisdom, His knowledge and His unconditional love for us. They are all working for us so we can defeat the works of the devil. All we have to do is learn to cooperate with Him.

About the Author

Having a specific interest in ministering to marriages and families, Craig Hill pursued an internship and later a volunteer staff position at the New Life Counseling Center in Denver. He subsequently taught counseling and missions on the faculty of the Marilyn Hickey Bible College. In 1987, the Lord raised up Craig as Senior Pastor of a local church where he and Jan served for seven and a half years, until he was called by God to devote his full-time energy to the ministry of Family Foundations International.
