CHARLESTON, S.C. - April 8, 2014 - PRLog -- Dr. Bright McConnell of Charleston Sports Medicine was recently interviewed by Channel 2 WCBD about Tekscan.  This test, which examines a runner's gait, can help athletes determine the case of injuries as well as how to prevent them in the future.  Deanna Smith, an avid runner with more than 60 combined marathons and half marathons completed, was plagued with injuries.  She scheduled a Tekscan test with Dr. McConnell to determine  the cause of the injuries.  The test shows Smith runs with a right heel strike that could be too blame.  Here is a link to the story:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qiz6b43mRMk

Traditionally, a “gait assessment” was a visual evaluation of the way a person walks or runs, including the way the foot strikes the ground. The F-Scan takes the assessment a step further by allowing the doctor to “see” inside the athlete's shoe. The accurate, objective pressure data  from the F-Scan system helps physicians to design a better treatment, so patients feel better faster.

Pressure profile data collected from the F-Scan system indicated where high pressure (red areas) and low pressure (blue areas) exist. By increasing contact area, plantar pressures can be reduced.

The Tekscan exam is easy and painless. Paper-thin sensors are placed inside  shoes and connected to a small pack that straps around the waist. The sensors collect pressure data as a patient walks, transmitting it to a PC.  Pressure profiles are shown on the computer screen in real-time. The system gives Dr. McConnell additional information in the forms of table and graphs, which are used for a more thorough evaluation and documentation.
