NEW YORK - April 7, 2014 - PRLog -- This month is National Amputee Awareness month.  For many years the amputee community has been forgotten or ignored.  However the tides are changing due to movements like this awareness month.  Recently Boston Marathon survivor and amputee Amy Purdy was cast to be competitor on Dancing with the Stars and Proctor and Gambel have a national commercial starring an amputee who cares for a family.  Progressive Orthotics and Prosthetics is celebrating this month in a big way.  They are providing new services for their patients like adding a social worker to their team of professionals.

Progressive O&P provides prosthetic devices for people living with limb differences and orthotic devices for those with mobility challenges.

Nobody knows more about that physical and emotional roller-coaster ride than Dan Bastian, Progressive O&P’s co-founder, vice-president and certified prosthetist. Dan is an above-the-knee amputee who has worn a prosthetic leg since 1989.

In 1980, Dan was diagnosed with Osteogenic Sarcoma in his right leg and underwent many (unsuccessful) reconstructive surgeries to repair the damaged bone and musculature. He made the difficult decision to have his right leg amputated in 1989, and has walked with a prosthesis ever since.  As a result of this, Dan has unique insight as to the challenging questions faced by new amputees. Questions like: “Will I ever walk like I used to?” “Will I work again?” “How will my amputation affect my family relationships?

Dan understands these issues because he has lived them. He understands what you’re going through because he’s been there… the multiple surgeries, the life-altering decisions, and the transitional road back to a normal and productive life.  Each day, he taps into that experience to help encourage and rebuild the lives of his patients.

Dan Bastian and the team at Progressive are subject matter experts /living limb loss and dedicated to helping others. Dan is a skier, water skier, golfer, boater, dad, business owner, survived a rare childhood cancer - all these things make him a great prosthetic practitioner.

Dan has a wonderful team assembled including, Sal Martella. Sal is the President and co-founder of Progressive O&P, Inc. since its incorporation in 1999. Sal is the senior practitioner at Progressive O&P and his dedication to his patients is unparalleled.

The addition of a social worker to the team is another unique service that Progressive offers to their patients to assist them with the challenges that they face.  Progressive has a unique understanding of all the obstacles a person faces with limb loss and has many resources in place to help them along the journey.
