Follow on Google News | Family Friendly Skiing on Mount Everest! An intrepid team from Family Friendly Skiing, the ski holiday specialist for young families, have skied the height of Mount Everest to raise funds for Ski 4 Cancer.
By: Ski 4 Cancer Their challenge was a BIG one! Mount Everest stands at 29,029 feet or 8,848 metres above sea level. To put this into perspective this is as high as most airlines fly or the equivalent height of 3,400 household staircases! This was the second time that a team from Family Friendly Skiing have organised a challenge in support of Ski 4 Cancer. A team of 20 seasonnaires took park in a similar challenge last year, raising nearly £1,000 for the Berkshire based charity. Andy Hayward, Trustee at Ski 4 Cancer explained “Skiing or boarding the height of Mount Everest in one day is a tough challenge even for advanced skiers and snowboarders. But it’s nothing compared to the emotional and physical hurdle that most cancer patients experience on a daily basis.” Andy continued “The team at Family Friendly Skiing are fantastic. They’ve been incredibly supportive over the past two years and we hope to expand our partnership in the coming season to start providing respite opportunities for cancer patients in the mountains. Given the positive effect that altitude can have upon health, we hope this will be a service which will make a real difference to people recovering from cancer.” Julie McMahon, Founder of Family Friendly Skiing added “We all know someone who has been affected by cancer… nearly 1,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with cancer every day. We’re delighted to help Ski 4 Cancer and we look forward to working more closely with them in the future.” Ski 4 Cancer was set up by a group of keen skiers and snowboarders who have all lost a close relative or friend to cancer. By providing a range of Alpine respite holidays for families living with cancer, Ski 4 Cancer gives families something to look forward to at the end of treatment schedules or after a loved one has died. Ski 4 Cancer also makes grants to palliative care centres and supports research into the positive effects of exercise and how it can both prevent cancer and assist in recovery post diagnosis. -Ends- About Ski 4 Cancer Ski 4 Cancer was set up by a group of keen skiers and snowboarders who have all lost a close relative or friend to cancer.
