The growing popularity of cosmetic plastic surgery in Africa
By: Abuja Plastic Surgery
LEKKI, Nigeria - April 6, 2014 - PRLog -- More and more Africans are now going under the knife for better image and self esteem. The “thick madam” image is starting to change as more Africans watch western television and shows showing slimmer waistline and bigger backside. Our study shows that more Africans are now interested in Brazilian buttock lift, breast implants, breast lift, liposuction, and tummy tuck.

As a Plastic Surgeon in Atlanta Georgia, Dr. Okoro caters to an international audience from Asia, Europe, North America, South America, and a few African countries. A few years ago, Dr. Okoro noticed an increase in cosmetic plastic surgery request from African countries especially, Nigeria. He received request from both men and women, though the majority of the request are from women. His patients informed him that there are a large number of patients looking for plastic surgery in Africa. Dr. Okoro traveled to Lagos and Abuja Nigeria to discover that a large number of Nigerian men and women travel overseas for plastic surgery services. Many travel to Europe, India or Dubai, because these services are not readily available in Nigeria by qualified plastic surgeons. There are many plastic surgeons in Nigeria, but most are trained in reconstructive surgery and have little cosmetic plastic surgery experience.

In other to provide the best care for Africans, its important to understand the culture of the people. The growing popularity of plastic surgery in African can only be best met by African plastic surgeons. African plastic surgeons who understand the culture are well positioned to educate and counsel patients interested in plastic surgery.

The growing interest in cosmetic plastic surgery in Africa may create an environment where unqualified doctors with little or no training in plastic surgery will start practicing in unsafe surgery on Africans. In the African environment where there are little or no safety measures, doctors without the proper training in Plastic surgery will take advantage of the unsuspecting patients who may not have the resources to research a doctor’s background and training.
