Why Jimmy Rollins, Daniel Murphy of MLB, and other professional athlete fathers should receive praise, not criticism, for also being professional dads.

April 4, 2014 - PRLog -- Friday, April 04, 2014– Sarasota, FL. – Major league baseball players Jimmy Rollins of the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Jets’ Daniel Murphy have received criticism from sporting commentators and other professional athletes because they chose to leave their teams this week under the terms of the MLB collective bargaining paternity leave agreement to be with their wives and family for the birth of their children.

Former NFL quarterback Boomer Esiason, himself a father of two children, one with special needs, interviewed on  New York radio station this week: “I would have said, ‘C-section before the season starts; I need to be at Opening Day. I’m sorry, this is what makes our money, this is how we’re going to live our life, this is going to give my child every opportunity to be a success in life. I’ll be able to afford any college I want to send my kid to because I’m a baseball player.’ ”

Founder of Every Thing for Dads Foundation, Jim McKenzie, who recently held the first national Every Thing for Dads Convention for fathers as the launch the launch of a long-term grassroots movement designed to raise awareness of the increasing need for dads everywhere to be involved in parenting and for their role to respected and recognized in the parenting said “ It is incredible that in the 21st Century, there are men (some of whom are dads themselves) who still believe that a career is more important than children and family, and it’s so important that dads are involved with their children right from the beginning”.

Research shows that pregnant and post-partum mothers have a far easier transition, and that a baby’s emotional and physical development is faster development if the fathers are there to support and bond with them. “Professional athletes are no different from other fathers – there is just as much at stake for their mothers and babies as ‘Everyday Joe” dads. This criticism is not only outdated, but is also undeserving and disrespectful to all men who care about their roles as dads, and to mothers, who often do not call from support from fathers just because of attitudes just like this”, Mckenzie said.

The Every Thing For Dads Foundation is a powerhouse in the world of fatherhood, and in particular is creating a communication hub for fathers from all walks of life that support them in their journey to become better fathers, and to create a generation of young men who not only understand their future importance as involved dads, and to appreciate that men can be defined a being successful by being a good father as well.
