Follow on Google News | Pete Olson’s 2014 Asia Formula Renault debut: charges up the pack despite qualifying issuesChildFund/BELL helmets/48 Hours Magazine/Sideways Driving Club driver Pete Olson of PS Racing team overcame struggles this past weekend in qualifying to entertain 20,000 fans and live television with major on-track battles in AFR Rounds One and Two. The American driver, who took 3rd in the season last year in the Asia Formula Renault Championship for PS Racing, is on a mission – to become the AFR Champion for 2014. However, in last weekend’s Qualifying, Olson experienced a flat tire, relegating him to 9th in the start of Race One. With a brilliant start for the first race, Olson went flat out and picked up multiple positions before experiencing gearbox failure on the very last lap of the race. With Race Two’s grid decided by the new 2014 format, whereby the start position is determined by the second fastest qualifying time [versus the previous format: Race One’s finishing order determining the start grid for Race Two], Olson gave the crowd thrilling on-track battles and picked up no less than a half dozen positions to finish just off the podium. Unfortunately, despite Olson’s success, he is struggling for sponsorship despite a record of success. “There have been great things going on for the sponsorship side, but we often working against corporate policies instead of going ‘out of the box’ says Olson. “Sometimes you need to risk it all to win” says Olson. “To give them something they’ve never seen before.” We wish Pete Olson the best of luck on his next AFR race weekend.
