PHILADELPHIA - April 3, 2014 - PRLog -- On Saturday, June 7, at 8:00PM, the city of Philadelphia’s leading young philanthropists and change makers will come together to celebrate seven years of supporting the city’s at-risk youth. The Spruce Foundation’s 7th Annual Gala will be held at Union Transfer in Philadelphia.

The funds raised will support the nonprofit’s mission of redefining philanthropy and cultivating the next generation of philanthropists through community giving and grant-making in support of Philadelphia’s youth.

“The Spruce Foundation is proud to be at the forefront of a small but growing number of foundations funding LGBTQ initiatives,” said J. Rudy Flesher, Co-President of the Spruce Foundation.

According for Funders for LGBTQ Issues, such giving has quadrupled over the last ten years. But despite this achievement, funding for LGBTQ issues and organizations represented only 0.24% of all foundation giving in 2012.

By the most conservative estimates, LGBTQ people represent at least 3% of the population.

“Foundation giving is currently nowhere near approaching the unique needs faced by LGBTQ people, including youth who face disproportionate violence, bullying, and homelessness,” said Flesher. “We are proud to face these issues head on in Philadelphia and we call upon other foundations to step up to the plate as well."

Each year at the Spruce Foundation Gala the organization celebrates the work of its grantees.  This year the Attic Youth Center was selected for The Spruce Foundation’s LGBTQ program area. Also receiving grants are Asian Arts Initiative, iPRAXIS, and Girls on the Run Philadelphia for its arts, education, and health and wellness program areas, respectively.

This year’s Gala will also feature performances by the Nimrod Speaks Quartet, a Philadelphia-based Jazz ensemble, and Swift Technique, billed as “Philly’s fiery funksters.”
