Alysoun Owen, Editor of the Writers’ & Artists’ Yearbook, opened with a Keynote on Self-Publishing in a Wider Publishing World, a lively speech that provoked plenty of discussion throughout the rest of the day. 'It’s buzzing. It feels very creative and I think when people go home they’ll have that creative energy. It feels alive and it’s been great to be doing something outside London.’ Alysoun Owen, Editor, Writers’ & Artists’ Yearbook This year, the conference featured a dedicated children’s self-publishing stream of workshops, with lead speakers Louise Jordan (Writers’ Advice Centre for Children), who advised delegates on how to structure a children’s book, and illustrator “That was an absolutely first rate conference - from the speakers to the catering and the venue. A great overall atmosphere and so many nuggets of info and ideas they wouldn't all fit onto the notepads you kindly provided!” Tony Boullemier, delegate The 2nd Self Publishing Conference offered multiple sessions designed to bring new insights into self-publishing, while giving authors the chance to meet with other self-publishers and specialists in the field. The 2014 Conference certainly lived up to its aims, as hot topics ranged from marketing to ebooks. Ben Cameron (Cameron Publicity & Marketing) held seminars on how to market a children’s book and creating the best media pitch. Online retailer Wordery, appearing at the event for the first time, talked about promoting books to online bookshops, and Matador’s Sarah Taylor joined Leicestershire Libraries’ Maggie Boyd to advise on how to work successfully with bookshops and libraries. ‘The conference has been fabulous, very well organised, very welcoming and it’s been very useful for indie authors.’ Helen Hollick, Reviews Editor, Historical Novels Society The conference also focused on the ebook revolution, with sessions from Diego Marano of Kobo Writing Life and Rachel Gregory of Matador on how to create and market ebooks. Author Polly Courtney talked about her journey from mainstream to back again, covering her three-book deal with HarperCollins to her return to self-publishing, and there was plenty of editorial guidance from Cressida Downing, The Book Analyst. The nuts and bolts of book publishing were also covered, with Nielsen Book’s Clive Herbert stressing the importance of bibliographic data and TJ International’ “Inspiring to meet such an astute bunch of authors at #SPConf14. Thanks for having me, @matadorbooks!” The 2014 conference was sponsored by Writing Magazine, Nielsen Book, Writers’ & Artists’ “I enjoyed the day and picked up some useful tips, especially about writing and designing children's books.” Moragh C, delegate. “Excellent Indie Publishing conference. Great speakers. Learnt two day's worth of things at your conference. All very friendly too. Good job.
