LINCOLN, Neb. - April 1, 2014 - PRLog -- Jim Jenkins, Independent candidate for the U.S. Senate, today objected to a decision by the National Federation of Independent Business to shut him out of a small business forum featuring candidates for Nebraska’s open U.S. Senate seat.

The April 22 event is being sponsored by NFIB, Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce and the Nebraska Farm Bureau Federation and will be held starting at 7 p.m. at the Sheraton Omaha Hotel.

According to Jenkins, being shut out of the event is another example of a bias against non-partisan candidates.

“NFIB’s refusal to allow me to participate in this forum is contributing to an undemocratic process that is ignoring 230,000 Nebraska non-partisan voters who chose not to join a political party. This large and rapidly growing segment of voters is being excluded from the primaries and the important task of selecting candidates for the general election,” Jenkins said.

NFIB Members Support Manager, Stephanie Wentz, told the Jenkins campaign the decision to invite candidates was based on who had filed with the Nebraska Secretary of State’s Office by the March filing deadline.

“I’m really disappointed that organizations that represent Nebraska small business owners refuse to recognize my candidacy. I have filed with the Federal Election Commission, am raising funds and filed financial reports with the FEC, have a professional campaign staff, am traveling the state holding events and meeting voters, and have participated in other candidate forums,” Jenkins said.

Under current Nebraska election law, only candidates who are officially identified by their party may file for the May 13 Primary Election for partisan offices including U.S. Senate. In order to qualify for the November ballot, Jenkins must first collect and have validated 4,000 signatures from registered Nebraska voters.

“By every other standard, I am a legitimate candidate for the United States Senate. This is especially disappointing as a small business owner, fifth generation Nebraska rancher, former president of the Nebraska Restaurant Association, and two-time chairman of the Nebraska Ethanol Board. NFIB members and small business owners should be ashamed of this decision,” Jenkins said.
