Swandby, was named the first EXHIBITOR Magazine Legends Hall-of-Fame Inductee.

Swandby, who founded Exhibit Surveys, Inc. (http://www.exhibitsurveys.com) in 1963, was honored at EXHIBITOR Magazine’s inaugural Awards Night event at EXHIBITOR2014 (http://www.exhibitoronline.com/exhibitorshow/2014/index.asp).

“During my early years at Exhibit Surveys, I was uniquely able to observe and learn from Dick as he led the industry to develop measurement and standards, and I feel deeply fortunate to have been there to learn,” said Jonathan “Skip” Cox, CEO and president, Exhibit Surveys, Inc.  “The principals that he instilled, like business and data integrity, are still practiced today.  Dick clearly deserves this honor, and the entire Exhibit Surveys team joins the industry in offering our heartiest congratulations.”

“I was one of the lucky ones who had the privilege to befriend Dick during his grueling journey toward industry acceptance of research and measurement,” said Lee Knight, founder and owner, Exhibitor Media Group, and chief instigator, GRAVITY FREE: Multidisciplinary Design Conference.  “His perseverance and significant contributions continue to benefit the industry to this day.”

“Those first few years were a real struggle because many show managers didn’t want me around, nor did they want data about attendees,” commented Swandby.  “I had been fired from my job as a chemical engineer because I was also launching Exhibit Surveys, and I had a young family to support.  I had no choice but to make this work.”

“Of course, I’m very honored to receive this award, but if I’m a legend, it’s because of the small handful of show managers who took a risk and let me sample their registration cards to get the names and addresses we needed to mail out questionnaires,” added Swandby.
