Exhibit Surveys Founder Named First EXHIBITOR Magazine Legends Hall-of-Fame Honoree
Richard Swandby Invented Exhibition Industry Research Measurement

“During my early years at Exhibit Surveys, I was uniquely able to observe and learn from Dick as he led the industry to develop measurement and standards, and I feel deeply fortunate to have been there to learn,” said Jonathan “Skip” Cox, CEO and president, Exhibit Surveys, Inc. “The principals that he instilled, like business and data integrity, are still practiced today. Dick clearly deserves this honor, and the entire Exhibit Surveys team joins the industry in offering our heartiest congratulations.”
“I was one of the lucky ones who had the privilege to befriend Dick during his grueling journey toward industry acceptance of research and measurement,”
“Exhibit performance standards didn’t even exist until Dick Swandby invented the measurement criteria that event marketers still use today,” commented Randal Acker, president and COO, Exhibitor Media Group. “He alone led the validation of the entire industry by developing metrics like net buying influences, audience interest factors, traffic density, exhibit efficiency, and cost-per-visitor reached. Dick was the original thought-leader in our industry, and we are all profoundly grateful for his remarkable contributions.”
“Those first few years were a real struggle because many show managers didn’t want me around, nor did they want data about attendees,” commented Swandby. “I had been fired from my job as a chemical engineer because I was also launching Exhibit Surveys, and I had a young family to support. I had no choice but to make this work.”
“Of course, I’m very honored to receive this award, but if I’m a legend, it’s because of the small handful of show managers who took a risk and let me sample their registration cards to get the names and addresses we needed to mail out questionnaires,”
An interview with Swandby will be featured in the April issue of EXHIBITOR magazine (http://EXHIBITOR%
