Simpliti Discusses Matt Cutts Video on 'How You Can Tell If Your Website Has Been Hit By A Penalty'
As these algorithms are hard to identify and even just plain old everyday Google algorithm changes are difficult to deduce, it sometimes become cumbersome to fathom out why your website isn't ranking in Google as you would like it to be.
* Manual actions
* Crawling issues
* Algorithmic Penalty
Cutts brings up the issue of a manual penalty and advised users to check their Google Webmaster Tools account. Here they can know whether the problem has been given within the account or not and what the solution is. "... It could very well be the case that, 'hey we thought there was some keyword stuffing or cloaking or whatever going on,' and that's a clear-cut case, you'll get a notification, you'll get a message, and then you can start to figure out and investigate, 'OK, where can I start to improve things or what can I change to make things better,'" quoted Matt Cutts. Google webmaster tool will also alert the webmaster about any such issues, like crawling errors that may impact the site crawlability. He says, "We have seen sites that will launch a new development website that was previously no indexed, and forget to take off the no index tag," Cutts said. "Or there's 404s or we can reach your site, or that sort of thing."
But how to take algorithmic issues? There is a lot more difficulty in determining algorithmic "penalty" because Google doesn't seen it as a penalty. "Really, the web spam team writes all sorts of code but that goes into the holistic ranking we do, and so if you're affected by one algorithm do you call it penalty, and if you're affected by another algorithm do not call it a penalty, is a pretty tough call to make," Cutts asserted. He said, "Especially when the web spam team is working on more and more general quality changes, not necessarily things specifically related to web spam, and sometimes general quality people work on things related to web spam, so deciding which one to call which is kind of hard to do. So we typically just think about it as the holistic ranking."
The digital marketing head of Simpliti, India's leading SEO company says, “At the end, it comes down to best practices. There are hardly any such websites that are totally perfect in every way as there's almost something that can be improved upon in order to maintain high rankings in Google's search index. Also there is a great number of tweaks that Google makes it to its search algorithms. If webmaster considered every change as a penalty then it would become a tortuous mess for webmasters to sort out each change.”
Even Cutts feels that sometimes the changes are so subtle that there is no need to announce them, however if there is any significant change then it becomes important to announce them.
