Can You Grow Enough Food to Sustain a Family With Aquaponics?

This way of growing food has many benefits; however it is not the answer to growing all types of food. There are many plants that require acidic soils and will not grow in an Aquaponics system. Therefore it stands to reason that Aquaponics is not the answer for all methods of farming or growing food.

Franks also points out in that in times of economic hardship, people look for ways to save money and return to a more sustainable way of living. Food and water become the focus as people look for ways to ensure they will have enough to feed their family, should disaster strike.  Unfortunately, Aquaponics alone is not enough to sustain all of your needs to feed your family. These plants may be dense in nutrition, but they won’t provide enough calories to sustain the average family. Aquaponics is a great way to supplement your diet, but it won’t provide for all your needs. This is why you must combine Aquaponics with other methods of food production if you want to become self-sufficient.

It isn’t an attack on Aquaponics, simply a realistic view of what it will take to feed a family of four should our current lifestyle come under threat. The reality is that becoming self-sufficient is hard work and requires more than one way of doing things. Frank was kind enough to point out these realities in his article.
