Katy Texas Insurance Company Urges Homeowners to Consider Windstorm Coverage

Most homeowners have insurance, but some may not be aware that their policy may not extend to provide windstorm coverage.

March 18, 2014 - PRLog -- “For homes located in areas that have a high chance of storms, a standard home insurance policy will usually not include windstorm damage,” says Frank Hursh, owner of Katy Texas Insurance. This is often the case, as including comprehensive windstorm damage on every insurance policy would cause a drastic increase in premiums. Insurers try to keep costs low, so they can pass on those savings to their customers. One way of keeping costs low, is by reducing the amount of windstorm coverage on standard policies.

For homeowners who do have windstorm coverage, it’s a good idea to ensure that the coverage is adequate for your needs.

“Even if your policy does provide some coverage, it is possible that you don’t have adequate coverage, as many general homeowners’ policies that do include windstorm coverage, only cover up to a certain amount,” says Hursh.

For homeowners who live in areas that are considered to be at high risk for windstorm damage, it’s especially important to find out if the policy includes adequate windstorm coverage.

Since high-risk areas are known to have windstorms, and often cause extensive damage - a windstorm coverage policy would be a wise thing to invest in. Some homeowner’s insurance policies may offer a level of coverage for certain types of windstorm damage, but generally not everything will be covered. Windstorm coverage is available in a range of different options, allowing homeowners to choose their preferred level of coverage.

“Windstorm insurance can also provide coverage for personal belongings that are destroyed or damaged during a windstorm. It can also provide windstorm coverage for your vehicle,” says Hursh.

As well as windstorm coverage, it’s important to check into flood insurance as well.

High winds often bring floods, and damage caused by flooding. It’s important to note that windstorm coverage does not include flood damage. If the area in question is prone to flooding, then a flood insurance policy should also be taken out as well.

“Windstorm coverage doesn’t cover flood damage. This may come as a surprise, considering that the most destructive floods are often caused by powerful windstorms. Flood coverage however, is a separate policy altogether, so it is important to check with your insurer to see about a specific policy that will cover flood damage,” advises Hursh.
