His family is one of the renowned one from the Bikrampur district of the present capital of Bangladesh, Dacca. His great-great grandfather was the first Indian to be made Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court and was knighted. He did his schooling from New Delhi and Kolkata. He did his higher education from the prestigious Cambridge University. After completing his education he opted Indian Armed Forces as a career option. He passed out from the National Defense Academy, Khadakvasla, Pune as a naval cadet. He was commissioned in the Indian Navy on 1^st July 1965. As a naval officer he represented India in many forums before retiring as Vice Admiral on 30^th September 2004.
