Newmarket Sets an Exceptional Example of Sustainability

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. - March 12, 2014 - PRLog -- Since 1985, Newmarket International, Inc. (Newmarket), a cornerstone in the global hospitality industry, has provided innovative hospitality solutions and services. Their focus on sustainability and the general improvement of the global community is demonstrated by innovative and distinguishable sustainable actions. As a result, Newmarket earned Platinum level Green Business Certification with the Green Business Bureau, which is a national membership organization that uses an online assessment to certify green businesses.

In keeping with the company’s vision for a sustainable future, the Green Committee at Newmarket recently partnered with The Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservationto organize two beach clean-up days. Each employee received two paid volunteer days in order to clean up New Hampshire’s iconic Hampton Beach. The volunteer events were very successful with over 50 Newmarket employees and family members being responsible for collecting almost 95 lbs. of trash and recyclables.

The company also challenged their employees to “Buy Local.” A monthly drawing was set up during the harvest months in 2013 and employees were encouraged to take a picture of themselves making a purchase at any food purveyors that sell locally grown/raised/caught food directly to consumers. They had over 60 entries and gave away almost $400 in gift certificates to local farmers’ markets and main street retail collaboratives.

Membership in the Green Business Bureau helps Newmarket buy, sell and partner with other like-minded entities; it creates expectations and dialogue and encourages all to live more cohesively and sustainably. Derek C. Key, Customer Relations Manager, states that incorporating sustainable practices is a worthwhile investment for Newmarket. For example, shipping charges have accrued to facilitate recycling programs for in-house coffee packets and alkaline batteries. Additionally, logistical expenses were assumed to collect re-usable greeting cards for the St. Judes' Ranch for Children and Newmarket purchases receptacles and biodegradable bags while also contracting specialized services (e.g. compost collection) to facilitate a “zero waste” program in their corporate headquarters.

Newmarket has taken on these added expenditures to support employee initiatives and to take responsibility for itself within the local and global communities where it operates. Newmarket willingly assumes some overhead costs to engage employees with the opportunity to live more sustainably and to maintain the organization’s goal of being a responsible “up-stream” partner, whether that partnership comes in business, the local community or the increasingly intertwined global environment.
