Glaswegians grinding their way to deafness!

March 6, 2014 - PRLog -- In a recent survey* undertaken by oral health care leaders, DenTek Oral Care, over 35% of Glaswegians polled stated that they were grinding their teeth whilst asleep at night. Teeth grinding or bruxism to give it its medical term isn’t just a noisy inconvenience to sleeping partners – it contributes to jaw pain, headaches, sleeplessness and in extreme cases can contribute to deafness.

So why are Glaswegians more prone than others in the UK to teeth grinding? One answer may lie in other research findings that showed that 40% of Glaswegians are stressed out because of money worries – and stress is one of the major causes of bruxism. Perhaps pressure on wallets is translating to pressure on teeth. So what can be done?

Well, according to Dr Dawn Harper, “Teeth grinding causes tooth wear, sually in the form of flattening and breakage. A comfortable dental guard protects against night time teeth grinding by cushioning your teeth and keeping them apart with the least material possible in the most natural position. A dental guard will help prevent damage to teeth, prevent noise associated with grinding, and associated symptoms like jaw pain, headaches, and sleepless nights.”

In more extreme cases, teeth grinding can wear teeth down to stumps which can result in complete dentures being needed. As well as affecting your jaw, and promoting hearing loss, it can in drastic cases change the appearance of your face.

In total, over a quarter of the UK population polled admitted to grinding their teeth at night. In some cases this got so bad they woke their partners and even themselves!

Additional survey findings undertaken by www.dentekuk.co.uk show that:

• Over half of the population surveyed (51%) thinks that a smile is the most attractive quality in another

• 16% of Belfast residents surveyed have not been to the dentist in the past 3 years
