New Book Highlights the History of Newmarket

Local author tells the story using collection of striking, vintage images

March 3, 2014 - PRLog -- The newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s popular Images of America series is Newmarket by local author Christopher W. Hislop. The book boasts more than 200 vintage images of this New Hampshire town.

Newmarket, a quaint seacoast town incorporated in 1727, has long been a hotbed of industry, recreation and culture. Through a collection of vintage images, this new book chronicles the town which is bordered by the Lamprey River. Images depict the mill buildings, which the town is known for and which essentially make up the architectural backbone and industrial fabric of the downtown area.  Photographs capture the earliest settlers fishing, lumbering and shipbuilding as their principal means of income and survival.  Later the mills provided the town with economic stability through textile- and shoe-manufacturing enterprises.

Newmarket celebrates both the known and unknown stories of the town.  Readers can learn about the intricacies of textile life and how the town boasted the largest single-room weave shed in the world at the height of its industrial textile boom. Author Christopher W. Hislop then takes the reader to the area’s current history, where Newmarket is a noted settlement, home to longtime residents as well as college students and faculty who commute nearby to the University of New Hampshire. The town has been revitalized in recent years by the equally historic renovations of the downtown mill buildings, which now host a myriad of units, from residential to commercial properties.
