Guitar Guru Reveals Virtuoso Blues Guitar Technique Methods
Virtuoso guitarists reveals blues guitar techniques for all guitarists.
In his resource, Hess discusses why most blues guitar players never achieve virtuosity in their playing because they are unable to combine an aggressive playing style with a clean, articulate approach.
Hess says, “Out of the majority of guitar players, most are unable to successfully combine intensity and articulation into their blues licks. When students come to me for lessons, they often think that you must either play cleanly or play with intensity. This is totally wrong! You can play with both and it really only takes a few practice sessions before you are able to do so.”
In addition, Hess states that there are three techniques that every blues guitarists should know in order to play creatively.
Hess says, “Most guitarists only have a small amount of licks that they draw from when they are trying to think of or improvise a blues guitar phrase. These are usually just the same general licks that nearly all players learn when first learning to play blues. However, becoming a great blues guitarist requires much more than this. You have to know how to ‘enhance’ these basic licks in order to become truly creative. The three techniques you must know include slides, ‘delayed’ vibrato and slow, intense bends. Of course, the techniques themselves are just the beginning. You must also master the ability to ‘use’ these techniques in a highly expressive manner.”
Hess continues, “Phrasing is the key. This applies to all styles of guitar playing, but is especially important in blues. Blues is a very soulful type of music. If you can’t play blues in an expressive manner, you’re not playing blues... your playing something else.”
