Feb. 13, 2014 - PRLog -- An archaeologist and cultural resources manager with Charleston’s Brockington and Associates, Dr. Eric Poplin will present a lecture on Unknown Graves in Downtown Charleston on Monday, Feb. 24, at the Verdier House, located at 801 Bay St. in Beaufort, SC. Dr. Poplin will provide historical background regarding the discovery and subsequent research into the mystery surrounding these graves. The Historic Beaufort Foundation Dinner and Lecture series is sponsored by Audi Hilton Head, a premier Beaufort area Audi dealer (http://www.audihiltonhead.com/cities/audi-dealership-near-beaufort-sc/).

"This lecture series is a great resource for information on the history of the Lowcountry," said Warner Peacock, President & CEO of New River Auto Mall. "We look forward to these lectures each month, and we're glad that we're able to provide financial support for this venture."

Last year, the city of Charleston began excavations for a planned expansion of the Gailliard Auditorium when scores of human remains were uncovered. Dr. Poplin was asked to step in to recover the remains and provide an explanation for who these people were and why they were buried there.

Poplin brought in a team of archaeologists to exhume the remains, being careful to keep from desecrating or destroying them. Dr. Poplin will speak about securing the remains and overseeing re-internment, as well as the research and analysis of the remains and accompanying artifacts that may give a clue as to who these individuals were and how they came to be interred at that site.

A wine and hors d’oeuvres reception will take place from 5:30-6 p.m., with the lecture taking place from 6-7 p.m. The lecture will be followed by a Q-and-A session with the audience. Those attending are invited to a three-course dinner at Saltus River Grill, which will cost $19 per person.

Both Historic Beaufort Foundation (http://www.historicbeaufort.org/) members as well as non-members are invited to the lecture.  Admission is $15 per member, $25 per member couple, $20 per non-member, and $30 per non-member couple. Seating is limited, so those interested in attending should get their tickets early. Call 379-3331 to make reservations.

Sponsor Audi Hilton Head is hoping a sellout for the Historic Beaufort Foundation’s Dinner and Lecture series.
