Follow on Google News | Explore the History of Kew Gardens in New BookCollection of rare, vintage images help share the stories of the area
This pictorial history reveals many forgotten stories of noted people and events from Kew Gardens, Queens, past. Images depict the lush, hilly terrain—“the backbone of Long Island”— and its location north of the Victorian village of Richmond Hill. The book focuses on how Alrick Hubble Man noted the 1909 completion of the Queensborough Bridge and envisioned a modern sister community to Richmond Hill in this northern terrain. He developed Kew Gardens, offering people the ability to have homes in an area of breathtaking country beauty while continuing to work in the city. Kew Gardens is the third Arcadia Publishing book written by students from the Aquinas Honor Society, the first two being, Jamaica and Richmond Hill. The students of the Aquinas Honor Society range in age of 11 to 13. The students and author Carl Ballenas created a unique book that allows readers to glimpse the area’s past and how that history affects its modern identity. The book also serves as another way to mark Kew Gardens 106th Anniversary. Available at area bookstores, independent retailers, and online retailers, or through Arcadia Publishing at (888)-313-2665 or online.
