By: Systema St. Louis: Russian Martial Arts Sonny was born and raised in the former Soviet Union, he joined the military service in late 1980‘s, after finishing this rigorous training, he was chosen by the Spetsnaz (Ministry of Internal Affairs, founded in 1802) to receive special training on subjects of physical security of top level military nuclear installations, specialized instructor course on terrorism and counter-terrorism. This training also included small unit special tactics, urban and mountainous terrain warfare, crowd and riot control, small arms (domestic and foreign), demolitions, survival in hostile environment and military CQB (Close Quarter Battle). During his Spetsnaz service, Sonny had to face the reality of violence which was exposed from a different perspective with many revelations. His real life experiences do not come from a very intense and brutal training regiment, but also from operational deployments with his Spetsnaz partners to central Asia and the Caucasus region, as well as work in the correctional institutions in Siberia and the Far East. Besides MVD training, an extensive interaction with personnel from special purpose units from KGB, GRU and other entities provided Sonny with opportunities to refine his skills in the areas of armed and unarmed combat, tactics and field craft, fighting methods and the most important skill for survival — being calm and react, all of these based on native Russian combat arts, nowadays known as Systema.
