A new biopatch may help bone growth for dental implant patients
According to researchers at the University of Iowa, scientists have developed a biopatch that can regenerate missing or damaged bone by placing bone-producing DNA onto existing bone cells, helping them generate proteins that lead to more bone growth.
The research can be found in "The Enhancement of Bone Regeneration by Gene Activated Matrix Encoding for Platelet Derived Growth Factor" in the January issue of the journal Biomaterials.
According to the finding, scientists discovered that collagen scaffold, which is used for tissue engineering, grew 44 times more bone when it was loaded with genetic information for producing bone and soft tissue in an affected area as compared to just the collagen patch alone.
Researchers involved with the study say the patch can help rebuild bone in the gum area as well. Additionally, they say the biopatch can reduce unwanted side effects because they used a “nonviral gene delivery system.”
It is also easier to produce in large quantities, reducing costs, researchers said.
According to Los Angeles dentist Dr. Greg Rubin, of the Calabasas Dental Institute, this kind of medical advancement may have great benefits for patients who need dental implants.
“The biopatch appears to be a real breakthrough that will allow dentists to regenerate bone much faster on their dental implant patients who have suffered bone loss prematurely and with much less complications,”
“It’s an interesting and viable solution allowing more patients to get their smiles and teeth restored. I do however feel that additional research in the area is needed.”
