Feb. 3, 2014 - PRLog -- CALABASAS, Calif. — You’ve seen the commercials and advertisements touting the benefits of one toothpaste over another because it contains a certain antibacterial agent that can help fight plaque, inflammation, bleeding and tooth decay.

The reality, according to leading Calabasas dentist Dr. Greg Rubin, is that there is no real evidence that proves one toothpaste is better than the next.

“Everything you read and hear about certain toothpastes being better than others is simply not true,” Dr. Greg Rubin said.

Even though there have been several studies, including a new review by the Cochrane Library suggesting that the antibacterial agent triclosan combined with a copolymer can help reduce plaque, gingivitis and bleeding gums, Dr. Greg Rubins says there is no scientific proof that this antibacterial agent actually improves oral health.

“These studies, most often times than not, are supported by the toothpaste manufacturers who want to sell their product and not by an independent group,” Dr. Greg Rubin said.

“The best way to clean your teeth and to prevent the buildup of plaque is to mechanically and physically remove the bacteria.  When you brush with toothpaste, you are just moving the bacteria from one side of your mouth to the other. The only real way to get true benefits from brushing is by using a clean, sanitized toothbrush every time. The toothpaste is secondary when it comes to physically removing the buildup of bacteria,” he said.

The best way to sanitize your toothbrush is to put in in the dishwasher or clean it with a special anti-microbial sanitizing solution, Dr. Rubin said.

With that in mind, Dr. Greg Rubin is currently developing an affordable toothbrush spray that will solve the bacteria dilemma for good.
