3D Imaging Helps Rhinoplasty Patients Adjust Expectations and Improves Satisfaction After Surgery

By using 3D Imaging technology to show patients how their rhinoplasty results will look like before they undergo the procedure, surgeons are now seeing increased levels of satisfaction among nose job patients and drastically reduced revision rates.

TORONTO - Feb. 5, 2014 - PRLog -- Recently featured on National CTV, Global News and Breakfast Television, Dr. Stephen Mulholland, owner of Toronto cosmetic plastic surgery centre SpaMedica,  discusses the importance of the new 3D imaging technology used by rhinoplasty patients preoperatively to dramatically improve their satisfaction due to the increased predictability of the results of their surgery.

“In the past, there has been up to a 20-30% revision rate for patients undergoing rhinoplasty or nose job surgery.  A very large part of these revisions were due to the perceptual and visual expectations of the patient being different from the physicians.  When the patient does not quite understand the kinds of nose shapes that the surgeon can create, it will often lead to unrealistic expectations of the kind of naso-facial harmony that can be achieved and, of course disappointment often follows,” commented Dr. Mulholland.

In the old days prior to 3D imaging with preoperative simulation, plastic surgeons have had general discussions of the kinds of improvements that rhinoplasty surgery could achieve, but it would be impossible for most patients to visualize the aesthetic effects these changes would have on facial proportion, shape and appearance.

With the new Vectra 3D Imaging System, the nose job patient preoperative nose and facial shape is captured in multiple views in 3D and with the special Vectra software , the plastic surgeon can walk the patient through all steps of the actual rhinoplasty surgery, including the aesthetic visual impact on nose-face balance with each change.

“Each change in the nose, from bridge reduction or augmentation, nasal tip cartilage changes, nose bone shaping and nostril contouring is systematically reviewed with the patient in 3D. Each of the nose changes can then be compared to the preoperative nose and evaluated by the patient and surgeon,” explained Dr. Mulholland.  “This precise 3D imaging process allows the patient to see what is possible and the effects on global naso-facial aesthetics and the surgeon to more fully understand the aesthetic goals of the patient.”

By adjusting different shapes and proportions, the rhinoplasty patient and surgeon can arrive at a consensus of what nasal shape changes best suite the nose job patient’s vision of ideal aesthetic proportion.  The patient can also see what pre-conceived changes are not possible.

“Pre-operative 3D imaging and simulated surgery is absolutely essential to modern rhinoplasty outcomes and success.  If the surgeon has the skills to deliver on the preoperative 3D computer simulated nose surgery, the patients are far more likely to be happy with the results of their surgery, because they got to 'Try on their Nose beforehand.'  This 'try before you buy' has resulted in a tremendous improvement in nose job surgical outcome success.  For the last 8 years that I have been incorporating preoperative Vectra 3D computer simulated rhinoplasty surgery, my revision rate has dropped to under 4%, compared to the 20-30% revision rate reported in the plastic surgery literature,” explained Dr. Mulholland.  “In those rare instances where revision surgery is required, it is now not related to the overall aesthetic gestalt, but rather more routine complications of wound healing such as small palpable fracture fragments or small scar revisions that are usually easily remedied.
