Patriarch of Ukraine to attend National Prayer Breakfast
The leader of Ukraine's Orthodox Church will be attending the National Prayer Breakfast with President Obama next week in washington D.C.
(Bloomingdale, IL) January 28, On Tuesday, February 4, 2014 the leader of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church- Kyivan Patriarchate, His Holiness Patriarch Filaret of Kyiv and All Ukraine will arrive in the United States of America to participate in The National Prayer Breakfast in Washington D.C with President Obama.
Patriarch Filaret is the leader of the third largest group of Orthodox faithful in the world with over 15 million believers. His Holiness the Patriarch of Kyiv and All Ukraine will also spend the remainder of the week in Washington D.C for official meetings with congressional leaders, senate members and State Dept. officials.
The Patriarch’s visit comes at a crucial point in the life of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and the country of Ukraine. Recent events in Ukraine including the mass protests against the government, beatings and deaths of civilians and the adoption of non-democratic laws have brought the plight of the Ukrainian people into the mass media.
His Holiness Patriarch Filaret has been uncompromising in his support of the entrance of Ukraine as an associate member of the European Union. He is outspoken in defending democratic standards and civil rights and freedoms for the people of Ukraine.
As the highest regarded religious leader in Ukraine, he has been called upon to participate in the negotiations between the Ukrainian government and the opposition leaders. The Patriarch brings with him decades of experience and insight from both Soviet and post-Soviet eras in Ukraine.
