President Obama’s Funeral Selfie: Right or Wrong?

By: Legacy Funerals And Cremations

SPANISH FORK, Utah - Jan. 28, 2014 - PRLog -- Lance Nelson, owner and mortician at Legacy Funerals And Cremations, located in Spanish Fork, Utah, recently weighed in on President Obama snapping a selfie at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service.

As someone who has been involved in the funeral industry for close to a decade, he believes it’s important for funeral directors and morticians to speak more openly about death, dying and the celebration of a person’s passing.

When asked whether he thought people should take selfies at funerals, Lance replied: “It depends on the situation and whether the person taking the selfie is being sensitive to the family. Was the deceased a fun-loving person their whole life, whose goal was to get others to laugh and have fun? Then I don’t see any problem with it. Again, sensitivity to the feelings of the family should always be the priority.”

Legacy Funerals believes each funeral should be a unique celebration of a person’s life. They don’t believe in cookie-cutter funeral services. Further, they do not believe it’s necessary to be grim and somber in order to express one’s love for the deceased.

“Regarding President Obama’s selfie, I don’t think it was wrong at all,” said Mr. Nelson, owner of Legacy Funerals And Cremations (www.LegacyFunerals.com). “They were not there to mourn, but to celebrate the life and legacy of a great world leader. The mood was not meant to be somber, but to be festive.”

Having spent years working at other funeral homes, Lance believes it’s important for funeral directors to help people view death in the right way. Not with fear and dread, but with understanding and respect.

“Our society can talk about anything and everything and yet when it comes to death, people tend to clam up. They don’t know what to say or what to do. If you look at all the past great cultures of history, they had a much healthier view of death in my opinion. They saw it as a rite of passage and a natural part of our life experience,” stated Lance. “My goal for Legacy is to help people have a better understanding of death, so they can celebrate the passing of their loved ones in a meaningful way.”

Legacy Funerals and Cremations is proud to serve all of Utah. They feature an honest pricing policy and are one of the few funeral homes today that will actually come out to the location of the family.
