Follow on Google News | Boston area residents & Irish transplants win in NYC Cochon pig cooking eventSmall farmers work starting to pay as they build their family business
By: Brambly Farms Brambly Farms owner, Ted O'Harte, said, "we owe our farm's success to three things; hard work, great heritage breeds which thrive in a 'slow food environment' and most importantly our loyal chef customers. When a chef places an order with us we appreciate the trust they are placing in our farm and in us the farmers. Without these chefs committed to buying quality products from small producers, like Brambly Farms, we couldn't survive ". When Ted and his wife, Sandra, both left Ireland almost 30 years ago farming wasn't in their plans but it was in their blood. Owning a small masonry business in the Boston metro area allowed Ted to purchase a tiny farm about 10 years ago. "Being Irish and growing up on a family farm, I wanted to get some animals and pigs and chickens seemed to be the easiest way to start." It turns out that after a few years and some luck, local chefs, heard about the new operation and it has grown into something which can pay the bills. The family now operates two farms with about 165 acres in two states. The smaller farm located about 20 miles south of Boston Ma. and the main farm located in, beautiful, central NY. The couples 25 year old son, Cormac, manages the beef herd of suckler cows and finish pig operation on the larger NY farm with Ted's help. "The NY farm allows us to sell into NYC with a local address and the land in Central NY is gorgeous .... very much like parts of Wicklow in Ireland."
