Vancouver Tech Startup Brings Their Food Bank Drive to Social Media

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Jan. 27, 2014 - PRLog -- January 27, 2014 (Vancouver, BC) – A local tech startup is determined to extend the crucial holiday donation period for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. Hiyu (http://gethiyu.com), a Vancouver-based company who launched their grocery shopping mobile app in 2013, has pledged to donate 1 lb of groceries for every “Like” their Facebook page receives until January 31, 2014. While donation bins for canned goods and non-perishables tend to disappear after the new year, Hiyu aims to raise awareness about the needs of the food bank all year round. To date, they have just over 500 Likes.

“The number of people the Greater Vancouver Food Bank helps each week is staggering: over 28,000 people. But they receive 75% of donations during the holiday season. We wanted to do our part in raising awareness about the great work they do in our community all year,” says Hiyu founder Daniel Roizman. “We created an app to make grocery shopping easier and more social, and we wanted to put that into action for the thousands of people who receive support from the food bank.”

Hiyu hopes to reach 1000 “Likes” by the end of January as part of its Gift of Grocery campaign in order to donate 1000 lbs of groceries. Anyone can visit their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/gethiyu to pledge their support with a simple click of a button.
