CHARLESTON, S.C. - Jan. 21, 2014 - PRLog -- Attorney C. Steven Moskos’ client purchased a truck in the amount of $27,000, although the dealership knew it had been wrecked. This event sparked a series of trials that eventually led to a million dollar settlement.

Because the dealership presented false information regarding the vehicle’s condition, and forged a signature on an official document, the buyer sought help from a reputable consumer advocate, attorney C. Steven Moskos.

After sending two payment request letters alongside official reports on the vehicle’s condition, Mr. Moskos received no response from the dealership. When asked about the difficulty of attaining restitution, the Charleston lawyer stated:

“I always work tirelessly for my clients. When the dealership continued to ignore my client, I knew we were in for a long battle, but one we were sure to win.”

Amid several refused settlements, the stakes heightened from a $27,000 award to over $200,000 in punitive damages. With a higher penalty in play, the dealership’s attorneys countered with the original award.

Despite a tough case, the jury ruled in favor of Mr. Moskos’ client, who was set to receive $216,600 for being misled into a fraudulent purchase.

But it didn’t stop there. The dealership hired a premier law firm to appeal the decision, which C. Steven Moskos countered on behalf of his client. This time, the dealership offered a consolatory $60,000.

After the second trial, the jury ruled in favor of Mr. Moskos’ client again. Moskos said, “It’s crucial for sellers to be honest and ethical with buyers. As a consumer advocate, it’s my responsibility to make things right.”

With this case in mind, the Charleston attorney sought reform. In 2010, he presented a case to the South Carolina Supreme Court, which ended with a new law that protects consumers who prevail on common law claims.

In light of this new protection, the Supreme Court added another $50,000 in trial fees to the original settlement. During several painstaking months of new contingencies and claims, the dealership hired 3 more lawyers.

With new trials taking place of several months, Mr. Moskos continued to protect his client’s livelihood. Even with several hard-won jury decisions, court and lawyer fees added up. In the end, C. Steven Moskos won an award of $1,060,000 for his client.
