Jan. 20, 2014 - PRLog -- (Encinitas, CA) Saint Katherine College students Will Liaos, Demetrios Phillipou and Niko Varonos have all been invited to play for the Greek National Baseball Team. "General Manager Tom Mazarakis of the Greek National Baseball Team has contacted us in the past and we are pleased to recommend Liaos, Phillipou and Varonos to play in this highly competitive tournament," commented Head Coach Mike Scolinos. The three have been invited to play in the European Championships in September in the Czech Republic and Germany. Also, Mazarakis is expected to invite Firebird Pitching Coach Kyle Scarry, who is also of Greek descent.

Greece took 7th place in the 2012 European Baseball Championship. The qualification for the 2014 European Baseball Championship was held from July 22 to 27, 2013 in Vienna, Austria and Zurich, Switzerland. Ten teams  qualified based on their recent results and a Confederation of European Baseball (CEB) ranking spanning the last ten years; two more teams will have the chance to play based on B-Level Qualifier rankings and will join the other teams to form the A-level pool. The qualified teams for 2014 are:  Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden. Track updates at the International Baseball Federation.
