Dancing Lantern Competes to Create Local School Residencies

Puppet Company combining ancient art with education competes to win $25,000 grant

BRONX, N.Y. - Jan. 19, 2014 - PRLog -- From Jan.18 - Feb. 23, Dancing Lantern Shadow Theater is competing in a national contest to win $25,000 from FedEx Small Business Grants. Although there are 965 other small businesses scattered across the United States competing for this grant, Dancing Lantern is the only puppet company represented and the only puppet company based in the Bronx. Dancing Lantern is a distinguished company because the artistic director is also a teacher. With unique insight into learning styles and New York state core curriculum alike, the grant money would be used to create residencies in local schools in order to encourage literacy by fostering student-written reader's theater.

Shadow puppetry is an ancient art that evolved in many different cultures all over the world. It is at least 2000 years old. The modern form of shadow puppetry performed by Dancing Lantern includes a combination of theatrical lighting, overhead projection and light emitting diode circuitry.

The contest will run Jan. 18 through Feb 23. Visit http://smallbusinessgrant.fedex.com/ for details.
