US Massachusetts to Strengthen Restriction of Flame Retardants in Children’s and Consumer Products
The US State of Massachusetts favors a bill to restrict certain flame retardants in children’s products and other consumer products. If eventually approved, the new law would take effect on 1 January 2014.
In March 2013, SGS informed readers that the US Commonwealth of Massachusetts introduced bill S 351 ‘An act to protect children and families from harmful flame retardants’ that would restrict certain flame retardants in consumer products including (1):
- Products for children up to the age of 12
- Residential upholstered furniture
- Consumer products
The bill has received favorable support in both Senate and House. As of 21 November 2013, the bill has received a new draft. If eventually approved and signed into law, the new law would take effect on 1 January 2014 (2).
