Computers, Digital Training & Broadband to kids in Shelby, NC

SHELBY, N.C. - Jan. 15, 2014 - PRLog -- Shelby, N.C. – Three families are now part of the digital world thanks to the joint efforts of the Boys & Girls Club of Cleveland County, Revo Communications, Turning Point Academy, the United Way of the Greater Triangle & the Revolution Technology Fund of Cleveland County.

Six children were selected from the Boys & Girls Club After-School Program to participate in the Revolution Digital Literacy Program, founded by the Boys & Girls Club of Cleveland County and Revo Communications to provide computers, digital training and broadband Internet access to kids in Cleveland County.

The students were required to complete a Digital Literacy Training Course (the “Course”.)  Upon completion, each family was given their own computer thanks to the United Way of the Greater Triangle’s Technology for Training Program.  The broadband Internet access was installed and provided by Revo Communications to each student’s home.

The Course was divided into four, 90-minute classes, and taught by Brad Andrews at Turning Point Academy.  Andrews covered computer hardware and software basics, setting up and using an e-mail account, Internet safety and accessing proper websites.  Parents were encouraged to take part in the entire program but were only required to attend the class on Internet safety.  This portion of the Course was taught in part by Sergeant Keith Bridges of the Shelby Police Department, who covered the how to keep personal information secure when using the Internet.

The digital training, computers and broadband access all come free of charge to the families, in large part because of the Revolution Technology Fund of Cleveland County—created by the Boys & Girls Club of Cleveland County to help bridge the digital divide by making computers and Internet access available to kids who are without those resources.  Revo Communications will provide broadband access to these kids through completion of high school and the computers are theirs to keep indefinitely.

Jack Weller, President of the Boys & Girls Club of Cleveland County and Dave Motz, Director Business Development at Revo Communications, were instrumental in the development and implementation of this program.  This program is the first step in realizing the mission of Revo Communication’s founder and President, Joe Campbell, to lead the revolution to end the digital divide.

“The smiles and excitement on each child’s face makes this program so worthwhile,” said Motz.  “We are living in the digital age.  When children don’t have access to a computer and the Internet at home, there’s a good chance they will fall behind in school.  We are proud to be making a difference in each of these families’ lives.”

The kids that participated in the Digital Training Program were as follows:

·         Jakeem French (James Love Elementary)

·         Jaqurion French (James Love Elementary)

·         Essance Ervin (Shelby Middle School)

·         Rita Ervin (Shelby Intermediate School)

·         Ikee Bridges (Shelby Intermediate School)

·         Izay Bridges (Graham Elementary)

Essence Ervin looked at her computer, smiled and said, “Now I will be able to work on school work at home...this is great!”
