In this new pictorial history the 1964 flood of the Eel and Klamath Rivers is chronicled through historic images. The book walks readers through the events of this “perfect storm” that led to the flood. First, a cold front moved in and dropped several feet of snow. Second, a warm front called the “pineapple connection” moved in and released lots of rain while melting the snowfall—local measurements varied from 20 to 32 inches of rainwater in three days. And third, the highest tide of the year had backed up debris and water for several miles. The images throughout the book show the destruction that the flood left and the clean-up that followed. Authors Rumney and Stockton use the book to not only show the devastation caused by the flood but to share amazing stories about human endurance and the heroes that emerged during the tragedy. The 1964 Flood of Humboldt and Del Norte hopes to preserve the history of this renown flood, educate readers and honor the legacy of the resilient men and women who worked together to clean up and rebuild the area.
