Career Step is now enrolling physicians in its ICD-10 Physician Education and Training programs, which provide physicians an overview of the coming ICD-10 changes and information on how documentation practices need to change for the new code set.

PROVO, Utah - Jan. 15, 2014 - PRLog -- Career Step, an online provider of career-focused education and corporate training, is now enrolling physicians in its ICD-10 Physician Education and Training programs. Announced at the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) Conference in October 2013, these training programs provide physicians an overview of the coming ICD-10 changes as well as information on how documentation practices need to change for the new code set.

“Physician training is a critical component of successful ICD-10 education,” said Mike Hodgson, Executive Vice President of Healthcare Products and Partnerships at Career Step. “An organization cannot successfully move to ICD-10 without robust physician training on the significant code changes mandated by the transition to ICD-10. Our ICD-10 coder education is already trusted by some of the largest and most respected names in the healthcare industry, so we are leveraging their experience as a foundation for this new training. As important, we have tailored our programs and training to meet the specific needs and time constraints faced by physicians.”

The Career Step Physician Education and Training programs include an overview of the purpose and value of ICD-10 as well as specialty-specific training. To maximize physicians’ time, the curriculum focuses on high volume diagnoses and procedures within each physician’s individual specialty. The programs may be accessed online at any time from laptops, tablets and mobile devices on Career Step’s online platform or through any SCORM-compliant learning management system (LMS).

These training programs, developed in partnership with YES HIM Consulting, Inc, are part of The ICD-10 Solution, a comprehensive ICD-10 education solution offered to coders, HIM staff, and, now, physicians. The new physician training curriculum was also developed in close collaboration with Stephen Spain, MD, CPC, whose experience and education as both a family practice physician and a medical coder make him particularly qualified to advise clinicians on how to avoid ICD-10 related disruptions to their work processes and patient care.

“Training is a critical part of the preparation process, so I hope physicians and all ICD-10 stakeholders will use the remaining time before the implementation date to invest in quality education specific to their roles in the conversion,” said Dr. Spain. “Career Step's program plan for physicians is to begin education on the general reasons behind the transition and the structure of ICD-10 and then to explain how this transition is going to affect the physicians’ specific workflows and documentation requirements. I think once physicians have an understanding of that, they’re going to be very interested in the transition because it is going to have a tremendous impact on their practice workflow.”

Career Step’s ICD-10 Physician Education and Training includes curriculum options for 24 different physician specialties and is presented in 15-minute modules designed to encourage learning and retention of the material.
