By: Jon Batson Batson's North Carolina roots can be traced back to Peter Batson, who moved to Hanover County, NC after his father, Thomas Batson, died in Virginia in 1725. With the number of relatives living throughout New Hanover and Pender counties as well as Johnston, Wake and Orange, Jon has often laughingly says "With all the Batson, Baker, Thompson and Massengill relatives, we got y'all surrounded." Himself, a Washington, DC native, Batson has fond memories of spending summers running barefooted at his Grandma Bessie Batson's house on Princess Place Drive not far from the railroad tracks where he could wave at his Uncle Gaston, a locomotive engineer, as he passed by. In fact, her place is the location of one of Jon's prize winning short stories "Gaston's Last Run." Few musical talents can make the cross over from singer/songwriter to author. A world class talent, Jon has performed before the Kennedy family, the Vice-Premier of China, on National Chinese television, as well as having five musicals produced in Hollywood. Jon made the shift from artist to author look seemingly effortless. Much like his songwriting style, Jon’s writing stance is one part “sand in your eyes” and one part “cool summer breeze.” Just when you think you understand the players, the plot and the purpose – the shift happens and you’re betwixt confusion and clarity. Old Books on Front Street is located at 249 N Front St, Wilmington, NC 28401.
