ISLA's Vice President Guest Lectures for Students at Cerritos College

Raquel Lizarraga, Vice President of Development for the nonprofit International Surf Lifesaving Association (ISLA), was invited to speak for students at Cerritos College on April 1, 2014.

NORWALK, Calif. - April 3, 2014 - PRLog -- Lizarraga earned her Bachelors of Arts in Business Administration with a concentration on Entrepreneurship from California State University, Fullerton. She has three years' experience with ISLA in marketing, management, and program development.

Lizarraga guest lectured for students in Elementary Statistics (MATH 112) classes on the importance of statistics and how statistics can be applied in the real world.

To demonstrate how statistics are used in the real world, Lizarraga discussed the importance of marketing strategies. She explained how ISLA applies statistics by using mean, median, mode, variance, standard deviation, and the coefficient of variation in their marketing strategy. She also presented ISLA’s data from the past three years to show trends, outliers, and how their marketing strategy has grown through data evaluation and knowledge of statistics.

“ISLA’s focus is to educate and train people around the world about water safety. The earth is 70% water-covered, but the majority of people cannot swim, and factors like these are why drowning has become the 3rd leading cause of death worldwide,” said ISLA’s Vice President, Raquel Lizarraga. “ISLA’s knowledge and use of statistics has contributed greatly to our growth as an organization because we have been able to reach more people and raise awareness and education about drowning as a global epidemic.”

She also described her experiences building social media presences for Cerritos College and ISLA and how social media has have a positive influence on the organization’s growth.

“Our company has seen tremendous growth because of our social media. Three years ago when I first started at ISLA, we had one social media account and only 30 likes on our Facebook page. Now we have over 10,000 followers on our Facebook page and we have six other social media accounts,” said Lizarraga. “We have been able to reach more people and share our message of drowning prevention, which has helped us raise more funding for our programs and most importantly save more lives!”

Cerritos College Math Elementary Statistics instructor, Dr. Mike Huang, notes that students need to understand the connection between information they are learning in school and how they can apply it in the real world, especially with social media and statistics being important business tools that are vital in today’s economy.

“Raquel opened her lecture with stats about drowning and that two people drown every minute. It shocked the class and it put things into perspective, especially when realizing that our class is an hour and fifty minutes long and in that time two hundred and twenty people died from drowning. Learning this really changed things for the students and myself,” said Dr. Huang. “Being able to use information like that is how you connect people to your business and it can really make a difference.”
